FISH Kil1 REPORT August 22,1989 On August 22, 1989, a fish kill was discovered in the circulating water discharge bay at the V. C. Summer Nuclear Station (see Figure 1). The numbers and species of fish found are presented below.

Number of Fish identification Size 17 white catfish 7-11 inches 6 channel catfish 11-15 inches 1 bluegill 6 inches I 2 unidentified sunfish < 6 inches 30 threadfin shad 2 inches The fish were bloated and appearea to have been killed during the night of August 21, 1989. The cause of the kill appears to have been a temperature fluctuation in the circulating water discharge bay., A review of temperature data recorded in the discharge bay showed a temperature fluctuation of 10*F on August 21,1989. This temperature fluctuation coincided with a fluctuation in Monticello Reservoir level (see Table 1). This phenomenon is consistent with data gathered during previous kills this summer. Dissolved oxygen (surface 5.2 mg/l, bottom 4.95 mg/l) and pH (surface 6.7) readings in the discharge bay also support the conclusion that the kill was thermalin nature. Although there have been problems with high pH values in wastewater treatraent ponds this summer, this does not appear to be a contributing factor.
