9/17/2009 Comparison of Indian Point Cooling Water Flows in Entrainment and Impingement Files Provided to NRC

In the impingement file provided to NRC, data were summarized by season. Seasons were defined as the yearly quarter (1, 2, 3, or 4) which include months Jan-Mar, Apr-June, July-Sep, and Oct-Dec respectively.

Data in the entrainment files are summarized by week, and include biological and flow data only for the weeks when sampling occurred. In order to compare flow totals in the two files, the entrainment flows were assigne d to seasons as: weeks 1-13 (Season 1), 14-26 (Season 2), 27-39 (Season 3). This assignment does not exactly match the assignments for the impingement data.

Total flow from the entrainment file (converted to m 3 from the 1000m 3/min in the file) is typically less than flow from the impingement file (Table 1), because not all weeks were sampled for entrainment. The only exception was season 2 in 1986 in which the entire season was sampled for entrainment. Due to the way weeks were assigned to quarters for that year, the entrainment flow total fo r weeks 14-26 (April 6 - July 5) is slightly larger than the impingement flow which was based strictly on flow during the months of Apr-June.
