Palm/uao Site Vice President 30-DAY RESPONSE -GENERIC LETTER 97-01, "DEGRADATION OF CONTROL ROD DRIVE MECHANISM NOZZLE AND OTHER VESSEL CLOSURE HEAD PENETRATIONS" On April 1, 1997, the NRG issued Generic Letter (GL) 97-01, "Degradation of Control Rod Drive Mechanism Nozzle and Other Vessel Closure Head Penetrations".

A written response was required within 30 days of the date of the letter indicating:

(1) Whether or not the requested information will be submitted and, (2) Whether or not the requested information will be submitted within the requested time period. This letter provides that response.

Consumers Energy Company (Consumers Energy) is working with industry groups and the Combustion Engineering Owners Group (GEOG) in addressing reactor vessel head nozzle cracking issues. Consumers Energy is continuing this participation in order to assemble and analyze the relevant information in formulating the report requested by GL 97-01. _ The information requested by GL 97-01 will be submitted within the 120-day period. If the schedule for submittal or the content of the report needs to be revised from that requested in GL 97-01, Consumers Energy will provide appropriate notification to the NRC. SUM.MARY OF COMMITMENTS This letter contains one new commitment and no revisions to existing commitments.

The commitment is: The information requested by GL 97-01 will be submitted within 120 days from April 1, 1997. If the schedule for submittal or the content of the report needs to be revised from that requested in GL 97-01, Consumers Energy will provide appropriate notification to the NRC.
