University of Florida Training Reactor Annual Report for Calendar Year 2020 The following annual report is submitted in accordance with Section 6.7.1 of the UFTR Technical Specificatio ns.
Summary of Reactor Operations:
Total Energy Output for CY2020:                                                              4,056 kW-hrs Cumulative Energy Output Since Conversion to LEU:                                            62,666 kW-hrs Periodic routine reactor operations were conducted through the first quarter of CY2020 with brief periods of unavailability for maintenance. In mid-April 2020 routine operations were suspended due to university and state response to Covid-19. Periodic routine reactor operations resumed mid-Aug 2020 and ran through the end of CY2020 with brief periods of unavailability for maintenance.
Unscheduled Shutdowns:
There was one unscheduled shutdown during CY2020. On February 25, 2020, the reactor was automatica lly tripped due to loss of power to the Stack Dilution Fan. The trip occurred in Mode 1 at about 20 kW as power was being raised to 100 kW for full power operation. Two of the three fuses were found to be blown for the three phase motor for the Stack Dilution Fan, the fuses were replaced and the fan operation was tested and returned to service.
Major Maintenance:
A listing of all major maintenance is presented in Table I. The first date for each entry is the date when the Maintenance Log Page (MLP) was opened; in quite a few cases, this date may be one or more days after the original problem was noted. The second date indicates the day the MLP was closed which can also be one or more days after work completion.

20-12        10/30/2020    11/13/2020    Repaired multiple Rabbit System leaks that was made capsule insertion and retrieval difficult and inconsistent.
20-13        12/15/2020      2/12/2021    Replaced multiple bearings and a gear head for the S-3 Control Blade Drive which has a longer drop time than other control blade drives and a noticeable "squeak" coming from the drives middle section. The retest revealed a significant reduction in drop time.

Radioactive Effluents:
Liquid Waste No wastewater releases were made during CY2020.
Gaseous Waste The total activity of Argon-41 released during CY2020 was 17.50 curies. Using the calculation method described in the UFSAR, the maximum potential dose to a member of the public from UFTR Ar-41 emissions during CY2020 was 0.078 mrem/year. This is significantly less than 25% of the ALARA constraint of 10 mrem/yr.

Environmental Surveys:
In addition to periodic radiation surveys using hand-held instruments, environmental monitorin g is accomplished using radiation dosimeter badges. Areas monitored are located around the exterior of the Reactor Building (RB) and nearby buildings, including the Nuclear Sciences Building (NSB), the Rhines Hall (RH),
Weil Hall (WH), Weimer Hall (WmH), and Wertheim Engineering Lab (WEL). The environmental dosimeter reports are tabulated and presented in Table III. Dose equivalents below the minimum measurable quantity are reported as "M".
