Dear Mr. Crane:

On Wednesday, August 2, 2006, the NRC Region III office hosted a Category 1, 1-dayengineering-focused public meeting with Region III licensees. The primary attendingparticipants were RIII licensee engineering managers who are involved in the preparation for,and support of, engineering-focused inspections. The meeting was well attended by most RIII licensee representatives, and personnel fromRegion I and IV licensees, and members of the public via teleconference. The meeting was successful based on open communications between all participants and a proposal to establish similar periodic meetings in the future.Agenda topics included:- Component Design Bases Inspections

- Permanent Plant Modifications and Evaluation of Changes, Tests, or Experiments (10 CFR 50.59) inspections- Fire Protection Inspections and issues

- Risk Evaluations and Regulatory ApplicationsOther topics discussed during open Question and Answer sessions included:- Region III engineering inspection scheduling - Cross-cutting aspects of performance deficiencies
