Victor Dricks (817) 200-1128 E-Mail: OPA4@nrc.gov Lara Uselding (817) 200-1519 NRC TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS RESULTS OF AUGMENTED INSPECTION AT ARKANSAS NUCLEAR ONE The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a public meeting on May 9 to discuss the results of an Augmented Inspection conducted at Arkansas Nuclear One to review the circumstances surrounding an industrial accident which caused a loss of offsite power to Unit 1 and an automatic shutdown of Unit 2 on March 31.

The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. in the Reeves E. Richie Training Center at Arkansas Nuclear One, 1448 S.R. 333 in Russellvile, Ark. The meeting is open to public observation and members of the NRC staff will be available to answer questions from members of the public after the business portion of the meeting.

Workers were moving a massive electrical generator stator out of the plants turbine building during maintenance activity when a lifting rig collapsed, killing one person and injuring eight others. Entergy Operations Inc., which operates the plant, declared a Notice of Unusual Event, the lowest of four emergency classifications used by the NRC, but terminated it after taking corrective actions to stabilize the plants power supplies.

The NRC will issue a written report on the results of the inspection within 30 days of the public meeting.
