NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs, Region II 245 Peachtree Center Ave. NE, Suite 1200 Atlanta, GA 30303-1257 Web Site: www.nrc.gov No. II-10-054 July 6, 2010 CONTACT: Roger Hannah (404) 997-4417 E-mail: OPA2@nrc.gov Joey Ledford (404) 997-4416 NRC SCHEDULES MEETINGS FOR PUBLIC TO COMMENT ON PROPOSED NEW TURKEY POINT REACTORS The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has scheduled meetings for Thursday, July 15, in Homestead, Fla., to allow the public to comment on environmental issues related to Florida Power & Lights application to build two new nuclear reactors at the Turkey Point site near Homestead, Fla.

The NRC will meet with the public from 1-4 p.m. and 7-10 p.m. at the Homestead YMCA, Harris Center, 1034 NE 8th St., in Homestead. Both sessions will be preceded by an informal one-hour open house, which will allow people to talk with NRC and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers staff.

FPL submitted an application for a Combined License (COL) on June 30, 2009, seeking NRC approval to build and operate two AP1000 reactors at the site, located about 40 miles south of Miami. FPL currently operates two existing nuclear units at the site.

The NRC is preparing an Environmental Impact Statement as part of its review of the COL application and the meetings provide the public with opportunities to submit comments on the scope of the EIS. When the report is available, it will be accessible via the NRC webpage at www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html.

Those wishing to register in advance to present their comments at the meeting, particularly those with special needs for attending or presenting information, should contact the NRCs Andrew Kugler by telephone at 301-415-2828, or via email at TurkeyPoint.COLEIS@nrc.gov. Members of the public may also submit comments in writing during the meetings.
