No: II-13-38 May 20, 2013 CONTACT: Roger Hannah 404-997-4417 Joey Ledford 404-997-4416 NRC Schedules Open House to Discuss Annual Assessment of Turkey Point Nuclear Plant The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled an open house May 30 to discuss the agencys assessment of safety performance during 2012 at the Turkey Point nuclear power plant. The plant, operated by Florida Power & Light Co., is located about 25 miles south of Miami near Homestead, Fla.

The meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Keys Gate Golf Club, 2300 Palm Dr., in Homestead.

There will be posters explaining the NRCs role and the NRC staff will be available to answer questions on the safety performance of the plant last year.

The NRC inspects nuclear plants and monitors their performance on an ongoing basis, said NRC Region II Administrator Victor McCree. We issue inspection reports throughout the year and we hold these annual meetings near each plant to discuss our oversight and answer any questions local residents may have.

A letter sent from the NRC Region II office to plant officials addresses the performance of the plant during 2012 and will serve as the basis for the meeting discussion. It is available on the NRC website.

The NRC review concluded that the Turkey Point plant operated in a manner that preserved public health and safety and protected the environment. During the first three quarters of the assessment period, the plant received some additional oversight due to one white inspection finding of low to moderate safety significance related to emergency preparedness. The NRC completed a supplemental inspection in September and determined FP&L had adequately addressed the white finding.

Although the plant was under normal NRC oversight during the final quarter of 2012 and the first quarter of 2013, three unplanned shutdowns this year on Unit 3 means that unit is now subject to increased oversight.

The NRC uses color-coded inspection findings and performance indicators to assess plant performance. The colors start with green, which has very low safety significance, to white, yellow or red, based on the significance of the issues. Inspection findings and performance indicators are updated on the NRCs website each quarter.
