NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 E-mail: opa.resource@nrc.gov Site: http://www.nrc.gov No.10-199 November 3, 2010 LICENSING BOARD TO HEAR ORAL ARGUMENT NOV. 19 IN HOMESTEAD, FLA., ON TURKEY POINT NEW NUCLEAR REACTOR APPLICATION An Atomic Safety and Licensing Board (ASLB) will hear oral argument regarding a hearing in the Turkey Point Units 6 and 7 Combined License (COL) application proceeding on Friday, Nov. 19, in Homestead, Fla. The ASLB Panel examines legal challenges to proposed NRC licensing or enforcement actions, issuing decisions independent from NRC technical staff.

Oral argument will begin at 9 a.m. EST on Nov. 19, in the City of Homestead City Hall, 790 N.

Homestead Blvd. in Homestead. The session is open for public observation, but participation will be limited to the groups contesting the Turkey Point COL application, the applicant (Florida Power &

Light (FPL) Co.), and NRC staff involved in the proceeding. Early arrival is suggested for all members of the public interested in attending to allow for security screening. NRC policy prohibits signs, banners, posters or displays in the hearing room.

FPL submitted a COL application on June 30, 2009, seeking permission to construct and operate two new nuclear reactors at the Turkey Point site near Homestead. The ASLB is considering whether to grant intervenor status in the proceeding to the Village of Pinecrest, Fla., Citizens Allied for Safe Energy, Inc., Mark Oncavage, Dan Kipnis, the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, and the National Parks Conservation Association. The ASLB will hear oral argument on several points, including whether the groups meet the standards to participate and whether they have presented admissible contentions against the application that can be heard in this venue.
