NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 E-mail: opa.resource@nrc.gov Site: http://www.nrc.gov No.10-106 June 16, 2010 NRC SEEKING ENVIRONMENTAL SCOPING COMMENTS REGARDING TURKEY POINT NEW REACTOR APPLICATION, MEETING JULY 15 Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will hold public meetings Thursday, July 15, in Homestead, Fla., to discuss the agencys review of a Combined License (COL) application for two new reactors proposed for the Turkey Point site near Homestead, and the environmental issues the agency should consider in reviewing the application.

The NRC staff will meet with the public from 1 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 10 p.m. at the Homestead YMCA, 1034 Northeast 8th St. in Homestead. The NRC will transcribe the meeting and post the information on the agencys Web page for the Turkey Point application at:

http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/new-reactors/col/turkey-point.html. NRC staff will be available for informal discussions with members of the public during open house sessions from noon - 1 p.m.

and 6 - 7 p.m. No formal comments on the environmental review will be accepted during the open house sessions.

Florida Power & Light submitted the COL application June 30, 2009, seeking approval to build and operate two AP1000 reactors at the site, approximately 40 miles south of Miami. The applications environmental report is available on the agencys website at:

Those wishing to register in advance to present their comments at the meeting should contact Andrew Kugler or Tomeka Terry by telephone at 800-368-5642, x2828 and x1148 respectively, or via e-mail at TurkeyPoint.COLEIS@nrc.gov by July 12. Those with special needs for attending or presenting information at the meeting should notify the staff by July 7. Those wishing to speak may also register at the meeting no later than 12:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m.

Individual comments could be limited by the time available and the number of people wishing to speak.

NRC staff will also consider written comments on the scoping issues associated with the Turkey Point application. Comments should be submitted no later than Aug. 16, either by mail to Cindy Bladey, Chief, Rules, Announcements, and Directives Branch (RADB), Division of

Administrative Services, Office of Administration, Mail Stop: TWB-05-B01M, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555-0001., or via e- mail at TurkeyPoint.COLEIS@nrc.gov.
