NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 E-mail: opa@nrc.gov Site: http://www.nrc.gov No.09-071 April 10, 2009 NRC ANALYSIS CONFIRMS CONTINUED SEISMIC SAFETY AT DIABLO CANYON NUCLEAR POWER PLANT The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has concluded the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plants design would withstand the effects of a potential new fault line off the California coast.

Pacific Gas & Electric, which operates the plant 12 miles southwest of San Luis Obispo, Calif., notified the NRC in November 2008 about the potential Shoreline Fault, located about a kilometer offshore from Diablo Canyon. PG&E provided the NRC data from the companys collaboration with the U.S. Geological Survey regarding the potential fault.

NRC staff independently reviewed the USGS information to determine the faults potential implications for Diablo Canyons operation. The staff concluded the plants existing design already accounts for ground motions that could be generated by the potential faults largest possible earthquake. The staff also concluded the potential fault does not alter Diablo Canyons tsunami hazard. The staff will continue to analyze additional information on the potential fault as it becomes available.

The staff documented its results in Research Information Letter 09-001, Preliminary Deterministic Analysis of Seismic Hazard at Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant from Newly Identified Shoreline Fault, which is available in the agencys electronic document database, ADAMS, by entering ML090330523 at this address:
