NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 E-mail: opa@nrc.gov Site: http://www.nrc.gov No.08-174 September 19, 2008 NRC ISSUES SUPPLEMENTAL SAFETY EVALUATION FOR OYSTER CREEK LICENSE RENEWAL The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued a supplemental safety evaluation report for the license renewal application of the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station in Toms River, N.J.

The supplement clarifies commitments agreed to by AmerGen Energy Co., the plants operator, as part of the aging management program for the reactors drywell shell. It also documents the NRC staffs evaluation of AmerGens reanalysis of the effects of fatigue on reactor recirculation outlet nozzles. The NRC asked AmerGen to conduct a new analysis when the staff determined that AmerGens original calculations used only one of six stress components typically used. The staffs evaluation determined that the original analysis was, in fact, considerably more conservative than the confirmatory analysis. Therefore, the original results were acceptable.

The supplemental safety evaluation report does not identify new open items. There are no new license conditions resulting from this supplement.

The supplement will be available on the NRCs Web site on the Oyster Creek license renewal page, http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/operating/licensing/renewal/applications/oystercreek.html.

Information about the license renewal process is available at http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/operating/licensing/renewal.html.
