NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, DC 20555-001 E-mail: opa@nrc.gov Web Site: http://www.nrc.gov/OPA No.03-136 October 27, 2003 NRC FINDS NO SIGNIFICANT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT FROM PROPOSED NUCLEAR FUEL STORAGE FACILITY AT DIABLO CANYON The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has issued an environmental assessment that concludes there would be no significant environmental impact from a proposed independent spent fuel storage installation (ISFSI) at the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant site in San Luis Obispo County, California.

Pacific Gas and Electric Company, operator of the plant, submitted an application on December 21, 2001, for a license to construct and operate the storage installation. The NRC staff is still reviewing safety aspects of the license application.

Spent nuclear fuel at Diablo Canyon is currently stored underwater in steel-lined, seismically designed concrete pools. If the NRC approves the application, the spent fuel could be transferred to dry casks on concrete storage pads, for a term of up to 20 years. A license holder may apply to the Commission to renew the license before it expires.

The environmental assessment, issued October 24, is available electronically through the NRCs Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) at http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams/web-based.html , using accession number ML032970337. Help in using ADAMS is available from the NRC Public Document Room at 301-415-4737 or 1-800-397-4209.
