Dear Mr. Johnson:

SUBJECT:

BNL REPORTS REGARDING PROBABILISTIC SAFETY STUDY FOR THE RESAR SP/90 As part of our ongoing review of Westinghouse's application for a Preliminary Design Approval (PDA) for the RESAR SP/90 Advanced PWR, we contracted with Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) to assist us in our review of Module 16, "Probabilistic Safety Study." As part of this effort, BNL has prepared the attached NJREG/CR 5177, Volumes 1 and 2, entitled "A Review of the WAPWR Probabilistic Safety Study (Internal Events, Cere Damage Frequency)" and "A Review of the WAPWR Probabilistic Safety Study (Internal Events, Containment Response, and Offsite Consequences)," respectively. We are providing these reports to assist you in understanding the concerns of the staff and our contractor.

The HUREG/CR has been written utilizing information that has been determined to be proprietary, and, therefore, has been withheld from public disclosure pursuant to 10 CFR 2.790. We request you review the enclosures for information that might be considered proprietary by your corporation, and notify the staff of the results of your review within ten working days from the date of issuance of this letter. The staff will withhold these enclosures from public disclosure until this review period has expired, at which time the staff will release the NUREG/CR to the NRC Public Document Room (PDR). If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact the Project Manager, Thomas J. Kenyon, at (301) 492-1120.
