RE: JMS-87Y-18.5T and JRC-80Y-20T Package Design Certificates

Dear Rick:

Nice to hear from you. I am sorry you have not been updated before now and appreciate your reaching out. We understand that the JMS and JRC certificates cannot be renewed/extended until the review of the safety case is completed. To accomplish that, we are engaged in the following:

We are working on the RAIs. We have a provisional contract with JAEA through Sumitomo to do that. Edlow is working with Mr. Norman Kent to complete the RAIs.

The goal is to understand what IAEA requires for an ageing management program (we are researching that);

compare the IAEA requirements and the NRC RAIs to the JAEA responses; and prepare a response (and revise the safety case) so that both the NRC is satisfied, and the IAEA requirements are met.

We have begun to research the TRANSSC website and query IAEA members on the Ageing Management Program.

We will submit the RAI responses as soon as possible, recognizing that it may be after July 4.

Thank you for offering to arrange a teleconference with subject matter experts. We will keep that in mind and request that if necessary.

I will keep you closely advised on progress, and please contact me if you have any questions.

Thank you for your continued assistance and support in this matter.

Best regards, Russell
