Fort Calhoun Station Backfill Requirements

1. General Following the demolition of Buildings and Structures to three (3) feet below grade and the removal of underground utilities, the Contractor shall perform backfill activities to bring the site back to elevation 1004. The Customer is responsible for the procurement of the backfill material, however it is the Contractors responsibility to coordinate the transportation and proper placement of the fill per the guidelines detailed in this attachment. Backfill activities will be coordinated with Final Status Surveys (FSS) performed by the Customer that are required prior to backfill activities commencing.
2. Backfill Material Source Customer has identified a borrow source for backfill material. The contractor will utilize the backfill material identified by Customer.

Contractor will excavate and transport the previously identified backfill material from the stock pile location or borrow source to Fort Calhoun Station (FCS) Protected Area (PA) for placement in the structures to remain or excavations.

3. Backfill/ Fill and Compaction Requirements Fill material shall contain no rocks or stones larger than three (3) inches and shall be free of frozen lumps, organic matter, trash, snow, ice contamination or other deleterious material.

Contractor will place the earthen materials in lifts not to exceed twelve (12) inches of loose material. Fill material shall be uniformly compacted in accordance with the following density and moisture content requirements.

Fill shall be compacted to at least 85% of the maximum Modified Proctor in accordance with ASTM D1557, or 90% of the maximum Standard Proctor density in accordance with ASTM D698.

The moisture content of the material being placed shall be compacted within plus or minus 3% of the optimum moisture content in accordance with the applicable ASTM D1557 or ASTM D698 standards.
