Dear Dr. Wall:

We have received your request for the conduct of an Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) project to poll NRC personnel, particularly those in management positions, on the application of probabilistic risk analysis (PRA) in the management of safety and regulatory issues. We understand that the results of +en to fifteen structured interviews of NRC personnel will be collated with ina results of similar interviews of nuclear industry personnel in an EPRI report w1 C. nut attribution to the individuals interviewed. We understand that a half-da/ or one-day workshop will be held to review the results.

The NRC staff agrees to participate with this activity with the understanding that the results are not to be attributed to the individuals interviewed and do not constitute an official NRC policy. I believe the results of this EPRI study will be useful in directing our own and industry leaders' attention to areas of confusion or uncertainty in the application of PRA to the management of safety and regulatory issues. You may use Robert Bernero (301-492-7373) or Ashok Thadani (301-492-4553) as your points of administrative contact with the NRC for this activity.
