Enclosed is a copy of the #inal AEOD case study on safety-related motor-operated valve (MOV) performance. This study clearly demonstrates that signiff.
cant att_ention needs to be given to this issue. As discussed recently between Jack Heltemes and the Chainnan of the NUMARC Maintenance Working Group, the NRC and industry both have many ongoing activities that impact this area.
In continuance of the NUPARC objectives and in the interest of fixing identi-fied problems in the operation of nuclear power plants in the most e "ective manner, it is requested that NUPARC undertake the appropriate initiatives to remedy the motor. operated valve performance and reliability problems. Although there are certain regulatory actions we could take regarding this matter, we believe that the industry could readily undertake the leadership role for this issue and arrive at an effective solution in a timely manner.
If NUPARC agrees that the industry should take the lead in solving this issue, I would appreciate receiving an overall plan of your approach to this matter.
I would suggest the staff and the appropriate industry representatives have a prorpt followup meeting to discuss these plans.
Jack Heltemes, Director, AF0D, is the cognizant staff manager regarding this matter. He will ensure that the appropriate NRC offices are involved in the staff discussions regarding your plans.
