. 1.0 SCOPE i

1.2 I This standard shall be used as a procedure by Bechtel NDE personnel and may penetrant be used as a procedure by subcontractor NDE personnel when performing liquid examinations.

i 2.0 PRECAUTIONS FOR PERSONNEL SAFETY 2.1 4 The materials and/or equipment used for exarsination shall be utilised to ensure full compliance with national, state and local laws governing safety. >

2.2 Liquid penetrant materials should be used in well ventilated areas. The liquidsflames open or aerosol or hotcans should not be heated above 130 degrees F (54C), exposed to surfaces.

Aerosol cans shall not be thrown into an open fire.

2.3 If penetrant materials require heating to reach operating temperature, heating shall be done by using a hot water bath having an innsersed thermometer.. ,

i 3.0 MATERIALS AND PERSONNEL i

3.2 Personnel .

3.2.1 Bechtel personnel performing liquid penetrant examination to this standard shall be qualified and certified as an NDE Level I, II or III, in the liquid l penetrant method, in accordance with the applicable Bechtel Nondestructive I Examination Personnel Qualification Standard, NEPQ which have been developed from  !

3.2.2 All NDE subcontractor personnel performing liquid penetrant examination to a

4.2.2 Final surface preparation should be such that all required ASME III and ASME XI examinations can be accomplished without additional surface preparation.

4.2.3 Prior to liquid penetrant adjacent areas within at examination, the surface to be examined and all least 1-inch shall be dry and free of any dirt, grease, lint, scale, welding flux, weld spatter, oil, or other extraneous matter which could obscure surface openings or otherwise interfere with the examination.

Typical preeleaning and posteleaning agents which may be used are detergents, organic solvents, descaling solutions, paint removers, and liquid penetrant g cleaners. The cleaning agents used shall meet the contaminant requirements of q , paragraph 3.1.2.

CAUTION: Blasting with shot or dull sand may peen discontinuities at the surface and shall not be used.

4.2.4 The surface to be examined shall be thoroughly dried before beginning the examination. Drying of the surface may be accomplished by normal evaporation or by using forced air.

4.3 Liquid Penetrant Examination 4.3.1 The temperature of the penetrant and the part to be examined shall be between 40' (4.4'C) and 125'F (51.5'C) inclusive. Qualification of this standard is evidenced by the attached Procedure Qualification Record, NDE-PQR-001.

4.3.2 The surface to be examined and any adjacent area within 1 inch shall be cleaned using a liquid penetrant cleaner from Table 1 of NDE-PQR-001. Cleaning shall be performed by wiping the surfaces with a clean cloth or absorbent paper towel moistened with cleaner, or the cleaner may be applied directly to the surface of the part. The part shall then be allowed to dry for at least two minutes prior to application of the penetrant.

4.4 Application of Liquid Penetrant 82 4.4.1 Refer to Appendix I for specific coverage requirements.

4.4.2 The penetrant shall be applied by spraying, brushing, or dipping.

the discontinuity that caused it; however, the size of the indication and not the size of the discontinuity is the basis for acceptance or rejection.

5.3 Hechanical discontinuities at the surface will be indicated by bleeding out of the penetrant; however, localized surface imperfections such as may occur from machining marks or surface conditions may produce similar indications which are nonrelevant to the detection of unacceptable discontinuities.

5.4 Any indication in excess of the following acceptance standards which is believed to be nonrelevant shall be regarded as unacceptable and shall be reexamined to verify whether or not actual defects are present. Surface conditioning may precede the reexamination. Nonrelevant indications and broad areas of pigmentation which would mask indications of defects are unacceptable.

Linear indications are those indications in which the length is more than three times the width. Rounded indications are indications which are circular or elliptical with the length less than three times the width.

5.7 Post-Examination Cleaning 5.7.1 Af ter interpretation of the area being examined, excess liquid penetrant materials shall be removed. Most of the dry developer can be removed by wiping the surf ace with a dry cloth or paper towel. Post-examination cleaning shall be accomplished with etterials specified in paragraph 4.2.3. a). The cleaning solvent may be; applied directly to the surface being cleaned.

6.0 STANDARDS OF ACCEPTANCE 6.1 ASME Section III 6.1.1 Acceptance criteria vary with the manufacturing process and the applicable subsection of ASHZ Section III.

6.1.1.1 All relevant indications and locations shall be recorded. "No Relevant Indications" shall be noted, when applicable.

7. 0 RECORDS (o)_ 7.1 The form attached to this standard, Figure 2, shall be used.

7.2 As a minimum, the following information shall be recorded:

a) Weld joint or part identification b) Examination procedure (standard), identification and revision number c) ASME Code section, paragraph / category d) Date of examination e) Examiner's name and certification level f) Examination results g)
