June 21, 1985 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555 Attention: Ms. E. G. Adensam, Chief Licensing Branch No. 4 Re: McGuire Nuclear Station Docket Nos. 50-369,-370

Dear Mr. Denton:

On July 20, 1984, a meeting was held at the request of the NRC Staff to discuss the status of the main steamline break analysis for McGuire in light of activities in progress relative to the Catawba licensing. As a result of that meeting, the NRC Staff requested that Duke submit a summary of the evaluation that had been conducted by Duke on McGuire on this issue.

By letter dated August 8, 1984 a summary evaluation of the main steam line break analysis for both inside containment and in the Doghouse for McGuire was submitted. It was noted that additional analysis was underway to support the licensing of Catawba.

The results of the analysis for Catawba were provided as Supplement 2 to Significant Deficiency No. 413-414/84-16, Duke letter dated March 15, 1985.

Attached please. find the results of additional analysis / evaluation for McGuire.

This analysis / evaluation has shown that the higher temperatures generated in the event of an MSLB in the Doghouse will not affect the capability to shutdown the reactor and to maintain it in a safe condition; and that qualification of all equipment in the Doghouse has been demonstrated.

Very truly yours,

8. /g/
