NRC Inspection Report Number 84-37 dated 11/28/84 2.
Memo from M. W. Herlihy (LSE-DG's) to R. W.
Grunseich (NOSD) dated 1/15/85 As stated in the attached memo (Reference 2), Inspection Report number 34-37 (page 4, item 5) seems to imply that LILCO plans to reperform Lube Oil Consumption Tests on the TDI EDG sets at 3300 KW.
Discussion with involved LILCO personnel showed that no such commitment was ever made by LILCO either verbally or in writing.
In order to clarify this issue, telephone conversations were held between your Mr. H. Nicholas and Mr. Javier M. Brand of NOSD/
Licensing the week of February 8, 1985.
Mr. Brand advised Mr.
Nicholas that LILCO has no intention, nor was there any commit-ment ever made, to reperform the lube oil consumption rate analysis because the previously documented lube oil consumption rates at 3500 KW (DG 101 and 102) and 3475 KW (DG 103) are more than adequate for determination of lube oil inventory require-ments and consumption at 3300 KW could reasonably be expected to be the same as or less than consumption at the higher power, as noted in unofficial observations during the DG 103 long duration test run.
Furthermore, it is LILCO's position that running the engines to fine tune the lube oil consumption rate at the lower engine rating is not appropriate.
Mr. Nicholas stated that he was under the impression that LILCO wanted to reperform the subject test, however, he concluded, based on the discussion presented above, that the requirements for the lube oil consumption rates have been accurately addressed by LILCO and that the requirement to reperform the subject test is no longer warranted.
He also advised that this information be presented for your closure.

NRC Inspection Report Number 84-37 Shoreham Nuclear Power Station - Unit No. 1 W.O. No. 44430/48923 In a review of the subject inspection report it was noted that on page 4, in item (5), there is an implication that we plan to reperform lube oil consumption tests.at 3300 KW.
Please take steps to cLtrify uith the NRC that this is not our intent.
The previously documented lube oil consumption rates at 3500 KW (DG101 and 102) and 3475 KW (DG103) are more than adequate for determination of lube oil inventory requirements.
It can reasonably be expected that consumption at 3300 KW is either the same or less, as was noted in unofficial observations during the DG103 Long Duration Run.
Running the engines to fine tune the lube oil consumption rate at the lower engine rating is not appropriate.
