Enclosure NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF STANDARDS AND TECHNOLOGY SPECIAL NUCLEAR MATERIAL LICENSE SNM-362, (DOCKET NO. 70-0398)
REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION INCREASED POSSESSION LIMITS RAI: Provide a basis for increased possession limits for Americium-241 and Depleted Uranium as requested by your license amendment request dated January 6, 2020 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System Accession Number ML20023A339).
Title 10 Of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 70.34 provides for the amendment of special nuclear material licenses and requires the licensee shall specify the grounds for such amendment.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology has long established possession limits for each of these radionuclides and has demonstrated a radiation protection program commensurate with the scope of licensed activities. Provide the basis for the request to increase the possession limits of these radionuclides and, should the acquisition of these radionuclides involve new processes or uses, provide a description of the activity and any procedures, including safety and handling controls.
