O APR 5 1982 MEMORANDUM FOR: Darrell G. Eisenhut, Director Division of Licensing
, r.,
FROM:
Thomas M. Novak, Assistant Director for Licensing, DL
SUBJECT:
INFORMATION AVAILABLE TO THE STAFF REGARDING TMI-1 STEAM GENERATORS As directed by you I have discussed the information provided to members of the staff by GPU related to the TMI steam generators. In addition.
I have also reviewed information not presently on the docket dealing with status of the plant. With regard to non-docketed steam generator information, the first set of information is contained in three large notebooks containing infomation regarding steam generator tube fabrication history, information related to identification of steam generator tubes and their spect fic tube heats, and $4 formation related to THI steam generator operating history. The infometton contained in these notebooks was provided as background information to the staff related to a meeting between the staff and GPU held at GPU offices 4n March 1982. Although the staff has not reviewed any of the material contained in the notebooks, it is our understanding that these notebooks provide background data related to GPU's failure analysts effort discussed with the staff during the meeting in March of this year. The technical content of the March meeting plus all other meetings with GPU ofs the steam generator corrosion problem has been summarized in trip reports or THI-1 status updates authored by Mr. Conrad McCracken. These technical trip reports are also provided for your infomation. Additional infomation related to steam generators is identified by the label Package A.
This information was provided to the staff at meetings with GPU in Bethesda and at their offices (n. January of this year. The staff's views regarding this infomation is also documented in the trip reports and status updates authordd! by Mr. McCracken. Package B also includes information related to steam generators and consists of a l
series of primary and secondary che-fstry graphs covering the last three F
years of plant operation.
Package C consists of the raw data used to generate the graphs in Package D.
No member of the staff has reviewed any of the information contained in Packages B or C, nor is the use of these packages anticipated in the licensing process. We believe the material provided in these packages provided the background and bases for the e discussions held with GPU in meetings in January and March of this year.
Other infomation available to the staff which is currently not on docket is related to scheduling activities for THI-1. They consist of listings of partid11y completed work items and in general the status of modifications A -2 %

at the THI-1 facility. This information was provided to us by the senior Resident Inspector at TMI-1 to assist us in appraising the status of the plant and the remaining items necessary to be completed prior to any
.,_ t,
decision permitting restart. The Project Manager for THI-1 has been the only' user of this information and has not made extensive use of this information.
Another (fece of information not currently on the docket is updated Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (PIDs). These drawings were provided to the staff to permit up-to-date infonnation on actual configurations of the plant recognizing the large number of changes that have been made to the plant over the last three years.
I have' asked Mr. Jacobs and Mr. McCracken to continue their review of their files to establish if any other information was provided to them by the Itcensee or the Senior Resident Inspector which has not been docketed.
Both individuals confirm that they are sure that no other undocketed information supplied by GPU and related to steam generators is contained in their flies. The search is continuing to identify additional documentation which may be available related to schedules, etc.
I believe this answers your request and I an available to answer any additional questions.
