This effort is being pursued at Midland as a result of the recent damage reported on the internal auxiliary feedwater header design by other B&W plants in operation.

The corrective actions which are being pursued for Midland, are similar to the modifications being implemented by other B&W plants with similar OTSG designs.

We plan to add an external auxiliary feedwater distribution header with injection nozzles through the steam generator shell. 'The plans will~also provide for abandonment and adequate stabilization of the existing internal auxiliary feedwater distribution header which has not been damaged. We are presently in the process of locating the positions of the external header nozzles around the circumference of the shell and once the positions are determined the shell will be ultrasonically tested in the areas of the hole I location prior to drilling the steam generator shell. We are also determining l the new routing of the auxiliary feedwater piping and the support arrangements

[ necessary for the external header.

The action items necessary to implement the design change currently are being actively worked out by B&W, Bechtel, and Consumers. We expect this modification to be essentially complete by Septemoer of this year and therefore it will not interfere with the start-up program for the Midland plant.

Before we begin construction, Consumers will be conducting a design review of the proposed modifications as they apply specifically to Midland. We are also

hopeful that a NRC Staff review and concurrence can be accomplished in this

time frame.

With this goal in mind, we request that the Staff provide a list of any

' specific design details that will be required to accomplish their design

! review for Midland. We are confident the forthcoming information will fulfill your needs and we can achieve our construction schedule goals.
