Special Nuclear Material License No. 1154, used for marine environmental tests of radioisotopic heat sources, was amended by reference (a), as requested by reference (b), to authorize the possession and use of 52 grams of Plutonium-238 as clad oxide pellets.

Contacts with the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory have disclosed that the only pellets available for the tests contain a total of 61 grams of plutonium with 80% plutonium-238.

In order that the testing program may be initiated in ad expeditious manner, it is requested that the quantity of plutonium authorized by reference (a) be increased from 52 grams to 61 grams.

Testing procedures and health and safety measures will remain the same as those specified in reference (b).

Reference (c) was a request for 26 grams of plutonium-238 for an extension of the marine environraental test program.

In view of the availability of test samples, it is requested that 1

this request be amended to 31 grams of total plutonium to allow for the element content other than plutonium-238.
