Request for amendment to Special Nuclear Material License (SNM)

No 1154.

1.

Naval Ocean Systems Center (NOSC) has recently received a research grant to study the recovery of trace quantities of Pu-237 and U-237 from seawater by certain precipitation and co-crystallization reactions.

2.

Pu-237 and U-237 will be prepared in nitrate or chloride solutions by Oak Ridge National L.aboratory.

The maximum quantity of Pu-237 dr U-237 is 10 microcuries of each nuclide. - [./. m r g(L p 3.

Dr. Herbert Weiss, Research Chemist, will be the researcher for this grant.

Funding for the grant is for approximately one year.

Dr. Weiss's technical qualifications have been submitted on previous-amendments to SNM 1154.

4.

All research will be performed at N0SC, San Diego. These laboratories will have as a minimum: a fume hood, appropriate protective clothing, and remote handling devices.

5.

One U.S. Government AN-PDR-27 GM survey meter, or equivalent, will be available to Dr. Weiss.

Calibration will be semi-annually.

6.

All contaminated solid or liquid waste will be collected and disposed of in accordance with enclosure (2) and current NRC/ DOT requirements.

7.

All current conditions and requirements of SNM 1154 will remain in effect.

Enclosure (1) to N0SC ltr Ser 037/1 of '25)an 1980 t.
