' Docket No. 50-285 Mr. Terry L. Patterson Division Manager - Nuclear Operation Omaha Public Power District 444 South 16th Street Mall Mail Stop 8E/EP 4 Omaha, Nebraska 68102-2247
Dear Mr. Patterson:
l
SUBJECT:
SPENT FUEL POOL RERACK - REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION (RAI)
FORT CALHOUN STATION (TAC NO. M85116)
{
By letter dated December 7, 1992, you proposed revisions to Technical Specifications (TS) 2.8, 3.2 (Table 3-5), 4.4.2, and 5.10.3, and to Figure 2-10 of your TS. These changes will allow an increase in the number of spent fuel assemblies which may be stored in the spent fuel pool upon modification to the spent fuel pool storage racks.
To continue our review we need additional information from you.
The enclosed information questions were discussed by the NRC staff and Omaha Public Power District staff on March 16, 1993. As discussed during the telecon, we anticipate that your responses to our RAI will be submitted within 4 weeks.
l If you have any questions about this matter, please do not hesitate to call me i
at 301-504-1313. This requirement affects fewer than 10 respondents and, therefore, is not subject to Office of Management and Budget review under Public Law 96-511.
Sincerely, Original signed by:

\\s Enclosure QUESTIONS ON FORT CALHOUN RERACK 1
What are the dimensions of the offset between the rack wall and the shealth covering the Boral panel, including tolerances?
(From presentation 0.080 +/- 0.004".)
2.
AAR Brooks and Perkins has supplied us with their Specification BPS-9000-01, " Item Specification for Boral, a Neutron Shielding Material." The normal dimension for the manufacture of Boral is either 0.177 +/- 0.012" or 0.265 +/- 0.015" per Specification BPS-9000-01.
In your technical specification amendment request you claim that the Boral 0.075 +/- 0.004" and a B'" areal density of 0.0151 gm/cmis being manufactured tp (a thickness of 2
min 0.014 gm/cm ).
NotethatSpecificationBPS-9000-01 specifies a boron density of 2
0.126 gm/cm for 0.177" material and 0.251 gm/cm for 0.265" material.
However, Specification BPS-9000-01 states that the B' content of the total boron in the boron carbide shall be 19.45%.
Therefore, B' areal 19.45% X 0.126 gm/cm, densities of ng 1 sized Boral sheets are l
2 l
= 0.0245 gm B m for 0.177" material and 2
2 19.45% X 0.251 gm/cm - 0.04B8 gm B'8 m for 0.265" material.
j l
Is AAR Brooks and Perkins supplying a special Boral sheet? Do they have a specification for this? If not, who is assuring the product?
