NCI h Atomic Plants and Fake Documents JESSICA SAV11CH: More trouble today for America's nuclear power industry. Charges of fake documents, forged signatures, and doctored test results in the construction of three Midwestern atomic plants.

Their heating, ventilatinq, and air conditioning systems are being inntalled by the /ack Company of suburban Chicago, in case of an accident vents Zack builds must keep escaping radiation from entering the control room, which would force operators out during a crisis.

Two employees recently fired by Zack have releaned documents which they say were falsified in an attempt to meet relieral safety standards. The papers include an internal Zack report admitted some documents were altered, whited out, contained doctored test results, and even questionable.

HOGAN: The Zack Company and two of the utilities involved re fused commen t , but a nuclear _ engineer for the LaSalli-plant said there are safeguards'in the vent deuiyn.

HAN: So even thnigh if those documents were fatnified it would have absolutely'no effect nn the safety-function of the

. system.

HOGAN: Although the NRC gave the green light for une of the three' plants to begin operation.last Monday, Administrator James Kepler admits his agency received copies of these documents three months ago, but investigators ignored them. Neverthelens, a complete NR,C investigation is now underway.
