Narrative

Report for LER 50-321/1981-089 On August 19, 1981,. with the! reactor atf27% power, the IP41-C0018, Plant Service Water Pump, was found to be incapable of' maintaining sufficient' pressure and flow. As the IP41-C0010 pump was already out of service for maintenance, Division II of Plant Service Water was declared inoperable and a 7 day LC0 initiated per Tech Specs 3.5.'J.2.d.

The last incident of this type was reported on Reportable Occurrence Report No. 50-321/1981-079.

The maintenance activities on the'"D" Service Water Pump were completed on August 21, 1981, and the pump returned to service.

When the "B" Service Water Pump was distssembeled,'a piece of griffolene was found enmeshed in the impellers.. It is not possible to distinguish whether the griffolene

- came from within the Intake Structure during previous maintenance activities or if it came through the Traveling Water Screens prior to the screens being repaired last month.

Divers were brought in to search-the Intake Structure after the screens were repaired, but the griffolene'could have been missed due to the murkiness of the water.

Personnel have been instructed to take precautionary measures when working in this area.

Preventative maintenance was performed on the "B" pump and the pump returned to service on August 25, 1981.

There were no effects upon public health and safety due to this event.

A generic review revealed no inherent problems.
