Narrative

Report for LER 50-321/1981-079 On 6-22-81, during normal operation pump P41-C001C failed to meet acceptance criteria for total dynamic head in accordance with surveillance procedure HNP-1-3182, Plant Service Water Pump Operability.

Surveillance was being performed at more frequent intervals on this pump as required by IINP-1-3182 due to decreasing performance.

Tech Specs surveillance require-ments 4.5.J.2.b were immediately executed and a 30-day LCO declared.

The pump was removed and a rebuilt unit substituted.

Inspec-tion of the removed pump revealed that the suction-bowl seal ring had broken loose from the bowl and was fastened around the suction-impeller seal ring.

This was caused by the high sand content of the pumped fluid.

Normally there is.026 -

.030 inches clearance between the seal rings.

In addition, excessive wear was found at the pump shaft bearing surfaces.

Accelerated deterioration of river water pumps at the site is anticipated due to the crosive nature of the Altamaha river water.

This pump had been serviced 3 years earlier, thus exhibiting a normal pump life cycle.

The plant service water pump operability procedure was reper-formed with satisf actory results.

This is a repetitive event last reported by LER 50-321/1980-026.

There were no effects upon public health and safety due to this event.

The unit is now in full compliance, and no further action is required.
