During normal operation, on April 14, 1981, the process computer became out of service due to a hardware problem. The process computer calculates drywell to torus differential pressure from drywell and torus pressure on instruments 27-PT-101B and 27-PT-1028. The second channel of drywell to torus differential pressure is provided from instrument 16-1-DPIT-102. This second channel of drywell to torus differential pressure Instrument was out of service (isolated) as a result of an earlier failure of the solenoid valve associated with 16-1-A0V-102A (See LER-81-003).

As a result of the computer failure and the earlier isolation of instrument 16-1-0 PIT-102, no direct drywell to torus differential pressure indication was available as required by Technical Specification Table 3 2-6.

In,dication was restored in approximately two (2) hours, well within the six (6) nour time period allowed by Table 3 2-6, Note 2.

An investigation of other computer failures, since instrument 16 OPIT-102 was isolated, revealed that three (3) similar events have occurred.

Each of the events is tabulated below:

Date Duration of Computer Outage 2/13/81 Approximately three (3) hours 2/14/81 Approximately one (1) hour 3/12/81 Approximately two (2) hours As noted above, indication was restored in approximately two (2) hours when the computer was returned to service, following cleaning of dirty printed circuit board contacts.

In addition, instrument 16 DPIT-102 was returned to service on April 18, 1981, following replacement of the solenold assolcated with containment isolation valve 16-1-A0V-102A.

It should also be noted that there is no Indication that the actual drywell to torus differential pressure decreased to less than the minimum 1.7 PSID (as required by Technical Specification 3.7. A.7) during any of the events and that the differential pressure could be calculated manually from the remaining operable drywell pressure and torus pressure Indications.

To alert personnel that a computer failure can cause loss of direct drywell to torus differential indication, administrative controls will be revised.

No additional action is required.
