Spalling of Containment Dome

-l A separation in the concrete doce of the reactor building was identified during preparation for the structural integrity test, when an ancho'r bolt failed to hold. Sonic sounding indicates a major portion of the dome is involved. The separatioa. is believed to extend to at least five inches below the surface and int'o the rebar area. The aggregate used

was reported to be lime rock and very similar to thr.t used in tha Turkey Point 3 doce, which failed during tensioning (June 1970)..

Licensee reported that they heard an event that sounded like a sonic boom on December 4, 1974, with 2/3 of the dome tendons tensioned. They now believe-the dome spalling occurred at that time.
The dome spalling problem is expected to i= pact on :he July 31, 1976

fuel loading date. Licensee plans have not been. finalized for investiga-tion of the concrete spalling problem. An NRC special inspection is planned.
Media interest is expected, due to the probable impact on the completion date of construction. NRC is considering. issuance of a press release.
