EVENT DESCRIPTION

On April 29, 1980, at 3:46 p.m.,

during steady state power operation, the 1 A Reactor Recirculation Motor Generator (MG) Set tripped. The IB Re-circulation Pump was immediately run back to minimum speed and the Unit One Main Generator output drooped from 705 MWe to 360 MWe. The 1A Re-circulation MG Set trip was caused by low oli pressure when the lAl lube oil pump auto-tripped. The emergency D.C. Lube Oil Pump auto-started.

The IA2 Lube Oil Pump was started and the 1A Recirculation MG Set was restarted at 4:15 p.m.

This was within the 24 hour2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
time limit required by Technical Specification 3.6.H.3 VI.

PROBABLE CONSEQUENCES OF THE OCCURRENCE:

The IB Recirculation Pump was immediately run back to minimum speed and the 1A Recirculation Pump was restarted within 24 hours2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
as required.

CAUSE

The lAl Lube Oil Pump tripped causing the Recirculation MG Set to trip.

The cause of the Lube Oil Pump trip is unknown. Work Request Number Q04983 was written to investigate the cause. All parameters on the pump were normal and the oil pump was started three times with no problem.

The only other possible causc could have been a spurious oil pump trip caused by contractor personnel. At the time of this occurrence, con-tractor personnel were working on a modification near the 1A Recirculation MG Set control cabinet, it is possible that some piece of material may have dropped on the control cabinet causing the 1A1 oli pump to trip.

Vlli.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

The f r ediate corrective action was to restart the 1A Recirculation MG Set. a write Work Request Q04983 to investigate the trip of the lAl Oil Pump.
