SUBJECT:
TMI TASK ACTION PLAhS - CRITERIA FOR AUTOMATIC AND PM UAL ACTIONS Your note of January 22, 1900 to me briefly discussed the subject of automatic versus manual (operator) action.
You stated that a task shoulo be included in the THI-2. Action to develop criteria for determining which safety actions should be performed automatically and which should be manual actions.

I agree with you that the subject of manual versus automatic actions is an important topic that deserves coverage in the Action Plan. The TMI-2 Action Plan Steering Group has addressed the subject in Section I.A.4.2 subitem (b)
" Safety-Related Operator Action." One of the tasks is to develop reconmendations relative to the degree of auto-mation that should accompany the activation and operation of engineered safety features as well as the resulting information display.
By a copy of this memo, I am forwarding your note of January 22, 1979 to J. P. O'Reilly, Chapter tiead for Chapter 1, and D. Skovholt, Task Manager for Section I.A, requesting that they revise subitem (b) of Section I.A.4.2 to core clearly address the subject o,f criteria for automatic and manual actions.
