YENTED CONTAIHMENT CONCEPTUAL DESIGN AT THREE j

MILE ISLAND - 2 l

Reference:

R. J. Bodnitz to File Same Subject. April 10, 1979.

L l

The following actions were taken in response to the referer.ce can:

J f

1.

On April 10, 1979 Sandia La'ooratories and Battelle Columbus Laboratories f

assembled task forces to work on the problen at my request.

i.

p 2.

BCL provided calculations of containment atmospheric tenditions and airborne radioactivity as functions of time assuming core melt.

L i

l 3.

Sandia developed several alternative schemes for venting and recirculating I,

the containment atmosphere.

{

4.

Mark Cunninghas; and I defined the functional requiraaents of the systee, l

clarified the constraints on construction and operation, and discussed i

i with b Telford (kRC) and Jim Thissing (Sachtel) at THI-2 the I

[

feasibility of various alternatives.

f 5.

A draft conceptual design and backup information were telecopied to t

the site on April 14, 1979, for review and cocment.

I 6.

Coments were factored into a revised design and lists of options i

for construction and operation of the system.

g 7.

Two revisions were telecopied to the site on April 14 and April 15. The l

final design is attached.
