Those on Attached List l

Gentlemen:

Subject:

Meeting of Human Engineering Review Group A meeting of the Human Engineering Review Group and other interested NRC participants is to be held on Monday, July 11,1977 at 1:00 p.m.

i in Room P-ll4. The meeting is being held to discuss:

a) the proposal for a Safety Related Operator Action Study and b) the proposal for a Human Engineering Assessment of l

Advanced Control Room Designs.

The Safety Related Operator Action Study proposal was distributed as to the Human Engineering Review Group memorandum of March 28, l

1977. The discussion of this proposal at the April 1,1977 meeting was covered in the April 8, 1977 minutes of the Human Engineering Review Group. The proposal was discussed further at an April 13, 1977 review group meeting.

Since that meeting, discussions have been held with the Systems Safety Development Center of EG&G concerning their participation l

along with Aerospace in the performance of the Safety Related Operator i

Action Study. Dr. Alan Swain plans to attend this meeting.

An outline of a proposed study of Advanced Nuclear Control Room Humca Engineering was enclosed with my memorandum of May 9,1977. ORNL has submitted a 189 for FY 1978 in response thereto outlining a Human Engin-eering Assessment of Advanced Control Room Designs. Steve Ditto from ORNL plans to attend this meeting and is prepared to discuss the proposed ORNL research program.

Sincerely, h+n~./

William S. Farmer, Chairman Human Engineering Review Group (Division of Reactor Safety Research)

WORK SCOPE:

i The study will consist of at least four tasks.

i i

Task 1: Review of Advanced Control Center Design.

In this phase visits will be made to CE, GE, N, and B6W to obtain infomation on their proposed designs, techniques, and philosophies rsgarding display of vital information to the operator.. Also, visits to a few progressive industrial plants and non-nuclear power plants will be made. Not only will the study include specifics of how information is displayed, but will attempt to identify the criteria and rationales used to detemine what types of infomation should beconveyedtotheoperatora$dwhy.

Task 2: Evaluate Advanced Designs.

This task will emphasize, based on infomation collected in Task 1, the identi-fication of problem areas that should be addressed by further RES sponsored research and development. As a part of this task we would also identify desirable techniques, hardware, systems, etc., that are now available, without I

significant further development, but are not yet Leing utilized effectively in the nuclear industry.

Task 3: Develop Criteria.

In this task we would identify criteria for use in the design and evaluation if advanced control room systems. We expect that some useful criteria could not be developed without significant analytical simulation work to ascertain l

the dynamic characteristics of the information that the operator would be t

RELATIO.NSHIP TO OTHER PROJECTS:

This project will be directed by ORNL staff who are presently reviewing app 15.a-tions of digital computers in reactor protection systems. The information i
