While in a.old shutdown condition, during the conduct of the annual Fire Pump Performance Testing for a r^presentative of the Insurance Underwriters, the operation of the diesel driven fire pump relief valve, while satisfactory, appea,ed to be sluggish in nature. The relief valve provides pump cooling flow and system pressure control during operation of the pump.

The redundant electric motor driven fire pump was operable therefore the event did not represent any significant hazard to the public health and safety.

The fire system was intentionally placed in a degraded mode allowed by Tech-nical Specifications Appendix A, Paragraph 4.12. A.1.c, by placing the diesel fire pump out of service to allow inspection and repair of the relief valve.

The re-lief valve spring and stem assembly was replaced, the valve reassembled and oper-ability of the system demonstrated by performance of the annual test which was witnessed by a representative of the Insurance Underwriters.
