. s S upplement tv LER 50-321/1979-063 On August 12, 1979, with the reactor in cold sh6tdown, while performing i the RER service water pump operability procedure (kip-1-3167), RHR service water pumps Ell-C001B' and Ell-C001D were f ound to be incapable of delivering a rated flow of 4000 gpa at 384 psi as required by Technical Specifications 4.5.C.I.b. The Ell-C001B pump id a flew of 3000 gpm at 384 psi and the Ell-C001D pump had a flow of 3340 gpm at 380 psi.

Af ter the discharge flow indicators were checked to insure proper calibration, the 'B' and 'D' pumps were pulled for inspection. The impeller wear rings, pump casing wear rings, and pump bushings were found to be worn; also, a section of a-cloth ynn; f ound in the 'B' pump. Due to the a-cloth being in the 'B' pump, maderwater divers were brought in and the intake cleaned of all debris.

On August 16, 1979, while the 'B' and 'D' RHR service water pumps were being repaired, the 'A' RHR service water pump failed to pass rated flow.

The 'A' pump, Ell-COO LA, had a flow of 3900 gpm at 385 psi.

Four days later on August 20, 1979, the 'C' RHR service water pump failed to pass rated flow. The 'C' pump had previously passed due to the flew indicator reading high by 200 gpm. The flow f or Ell-C001C, af ter recalibrat'.g the flow indicator, was 4000 gpa at 360 psi.

After the 'B' and 'D' pumps were repaired, they were reinstalled and passed the rated flow at the required pressure. The 'B ' pump was plac ed back in service on August 20, 1979 and the 'D' punp placed back in service on Augsut 21, 1979.

RHR service water pumps ' A' and 'C' were then pulled for inspection. The

'A' pump had worn wear rings and the 'C' pump had a bushi a turning in the housing. Both pumps were rebuilt and reinstalled. The pumps then passed rated flow at the correct pressure. The 'A' and 'C' pumps were re turned to service on August 24, 1979.

1r. addition to the pumps being repaired and the flow indicators being recalibrated, the flow transmitter in each RHR service water loop had a bad.Soard and_was required to_be repaired. Also, the RHR service water instrumentation located b1 the Control Room was changed to provide mere accurate readings.

There were no ef f ects to public health and saf ety as the un i was already in cold shutdown.

The actual operatin;; time for these pumps are 2253.6 hours6.944444e-5 days
0.00167 hours
9.920635e-6 weeks
2.283e-6 months
en Ell-C001 A.

2754.25 hours2.893519e-4 days
0.00694 hours
4.133598e-5 weeks
9.5125e-6 months
on Ell-C031B, 1347.25 heurs oa Ell-C001C, and 104.'.73 h mrs on Ell-COO L D. The pumps are designed for a performance curve with no allowances given for wear with a rated flow of 4000 gpn at 384 psi at the present river level. They punp raw river water.

A study will be made to determine what can be done to prov'ide bet ter service from these pumps. A follow-up report will be submitted as soon as the study is completed.
