SUBJECT:

REVISION 1 TO THE REPORT FOR ANALYSIS OF THE WATER SAMPLES FROM KERR-MCGEE

CIMARRON, CRESCENT, OKLAHOMA (DOCKET NO.70-925; RFrA NO.01-015)

Dear Ms. Walker:

This letter is to report revised Tc-99 concentrations due to the reanalysis of five of the 13 water samples from Kerr-McGee Cimarron. The Environmental Survey and Site Assessment Program (ESSAP) of the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and* Education (ORISE) received 13 water samples collected on September 5, 2001 at the Kerr-McGee Cimarron facility in Crescent, Oklahoma. ESSAP reanalyzed five water samples after discussions with the licensee's laboratory failed to identify any obvious error that would account for the observed differences in the analytical data generated by each laboratory.

A comparison of the two Tc-99 data sets indicated the concentrations of two of the samples, W003 and W009, were significantly different.

A review of the analytical process was conducted. The review indicated that these samples were probably cross contaminated during the first batch of analytical work.

es We apologize for this error.

Cross contamination incidents are very rare in our laboratory, however, we are talcing steps to increase our quality control program to further minimize such situations. A nonconformance was initiated and followup actions will be communicated to John Buckley.

The five water samples were reanalyzed for Tc-99 (Procedure AP5 Rev. 11 and CP4 Rev. 1) and the data are provided in the attached table. Emilio Garcia (NRC/Region IV) requested that only the revised Tc-99 data table for the five water samples be submitted with this revised letter report.

ESSAP' s Quality Control (QC) procedures were followed for these analyses. The daily QC and detector background for the counting instrumentation used in the analyses were within acceptable limits.
