Response to Request for Additional Information Docket No.52-048 eRAI No.: 8974 Date of RAI Issue: 08/05/2017 NRC Question No.: 03.08.04-20 10 CFR 50, Appendix A, GDC 1, 2, and 4 provides requirements to be met by SSC important to safety. In accordance with these requirements, DSRS Section 3.8.4 provides review guidance pertaining to the design of important to safety seismic Category I structures, other than the containment. Consistent with DSRS Section 3.8.4, the staff reviews, in part, loads and loading combinations.

Provide the magnitude of bounding seismic design forces of the roof in the three orthogonal directions (North-South, East-West, and Vertical).

NuScale Response:

An element-by-element design check is performed to show that roof capacities are adequate to withstand the design loads. Based on the locations of the maximum combined moment and shear resultants (static + dynamic), five critical locations were selected for evaluating the roof.

These sections are shown in Figure 1.

The maximum seismic forces and moments for these elements are provided in Table 1. The variables are defined as follows and shown in Figure 2:

  • Sxx = membrane forces in the x direction (east/west)
  • Syy = membrane forces in the y direction (north/south)

NuScale Nonproprietary

  • Sxy = in-plane shear
  • Mxx + Mxy = out-of-plane moment about the x axis
  • Myy + Mxy = out-of-plane moment about the y axis
  • Vxz, Vyz = out-of-plane shear Roof Section 3 failed in in-plane shear, so the section evaluated was extended to the whole width (Figure 3) and averaging calculations are provided to show adequacy (Table 2).

FSAR markups for the roof will be provided as part of the response to RAI 8971 Question 03.08.04-11.
