3. Descrintion of Valve 3.l Valve Construction 3.1.l Figure l is a generic illustration of the Crosby Style HPV-SN Pressure Relief Valve at Virginia Electric & Power, North Anna 3 and 4.

Part numbers in parent~esis in the following ref er to parts in Figure l.

3.1.Z Inside the main valve body (l) is housed the lower portion of the nozzle (5), disc (4), guide (3) and spring (6).

3.1.3 The pilot valve body (2) is welded to the main valve. body (l).

  • The

.nozzle (15) is retained between the pilot valve body (2) and the b~nnet (ZO) by the bonnet studs (12) and nuts (13).

3.1.4 Housed in the noz;le (15) and bonnet (20) is the disc (14), spring (21), spring wash~r (23) and retaining ring (22).

Also contained within the bonnet by the bellows top adapter (18) is the bellows (17) and the disc actuator (19).

3.l.5 Attached to the main valve body (1) by the bracket studs (27) and nuts (26) is the solenoid bracket (28)p to ~hich the solenoid {35) and solenoid cover (41) is*attached.

3.l.6 The adjusting bolt (31) is threaded into the lever (33) a.nd held in place by the adju~!:ing bolt lock nut (32).

The link (29) connects the lever (33) and solenoid (35).

3.2 Valve Operation (See Figure l) 3.2.l Under normal operating conditions, the Inlet Port "A", the Cavities "B" and ncn 9 and the Pilot: Valve Connecting Cavity "D" are at the same fluid. pressure.

The disc (main valve) (L:-) seats against the nozzle (5) seat since the p'l:'essure in Cavicy "C" is greater* :han the pressure in Discharge Port "E".

The disc (pilot valve)(l4) >'eats against the nozzle (pilot valve)(l3) seat since the pressure in the Connecting Cavity "D" is greater than the pressure in th'! Pilot Valve Discharge Port "'F".

3.2.1.1 When the solenoid (35) is energized, the solanoid plunger actuates ~he lever (solenoid)(33) causing the adjusting bolt (31) to strike the end of the disc actuator (pilot valve)(l9).

This action unseats the disc (pilot valve)(l~) and allows steam to pass through the vent holes in :he nozzle (pilot valve) (13) to the Pilot Valve Discharge Port "F".

3.

Descriotion of Valve (Continued) 3.2 Valve Ooeration (See Figure l)(Continued) 3.2.1 (Continued) 3.2.1.2 When the pilot v.alve opens, pressure in Cavity "C" is reduced and the greater pressure in Cavity "B" cao.:.ses the disc (main valve)(4) to open.

3.2.1.3 When the solenoid (35) is de-energized the solenoid plunger returns to the original free position.

The pilot valve closes causing pressure to again build up in Cavities "D" and "C",

thereby closing the disc (main valve)(4) *

Conclusion CROS3'f VALVE a GAGE CO~PA~~y WRENTioiAM, MASS Page 13 6.1 Both the design installed at Toledo Edison and the selected test valve possess the same principle of operation and except for the design differences noted in Section 5 of this report, the pilot which is installed in the valve and the main valve internals are basically identical in material and geometry.

The selected test valves (North Anna 3 and 4, Crosby Assembly ~o. :{56969) are generally representative to the Crosby Style HPV-SN Powa~ Operated Relief Valve installed at Toledo Edison, Davis Besse Unit No. 1, as a pressurizer power operated relief valve *
