EPRI.PERSPECTIVE PROJECT DESCRIPTION This project is part of an overa11 program conducted by EPRI for the PWR uti 1 i ty industry to respond to the USN RC rec_onnnendations documented in NUREG 0.578 Section 2.l.2, 11 Performance:Testing of BWR and PWR Safety and..

Relief Valves", and as clarified in NUREG 0737," Item 11..D.l.A.

The total program consists of testing, analysis, and technical support activities.

This project is specifically focused on one technical support activity:

Selection of a set of PWR Safety and Rel1 ef Valves for testing which ade-quately represent the tota*l PWR valve population.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES The objectives of. this project are as follows:

Compile a complete list of valve types, models and sizes used or intended for use in PWR plants;

  • Select a set of safety and relief valves for testing; Provide justification that the selected test valves represent all of the valves used or intended for use in PWR plants.

PROJECT RESULTS Evaluations were performed by the valve manufacturers which-considered the effects of differences in valve operational characteristics, materials, design details, and sizes on valve operability.

As a result of these evaluations, ten (l 0) Power Operated Relief Valves~{PORVs).and'ni~~ (~fsat~ty Valves have been selected as valves J (. L: i

I.

INTRODUCTION NUREG 0578 requires that testing be performed on full-scale pressurizer safety and relief valves representative*of those in use or.planned for use in PWR's.

To obtain the valve operability data for the large variety of valves used in domestic PWR plants it was necessary to select a limited, but fully representative set of valves.for test purposes.

In order to select the test valves, a complete list of. valve types,

  • models, and sizes used or intended for use i.n PWR plants was compiled based on information provided by the NSSS vendors, valve manufacturers..
  • and PWR utilities.

From these lists, valves were s.elected for: test which adequately represent the total PWR valve population.'.. Justifica-tion that th~ test valve results are applicable to all plant/vendor valves was developed based on evaluations performed by the valve manu-*

facturers.

These evaluations considered the effects of differences in valve operation characteristics, materials, design details, orifice*

sizes and manufacturing processes on valve operability.

The purpose of this valve selection/justification report is to provide the detailed documentation justifying the selection *Of valves for the tests. The contents of the report are as follows:

1 Section II -- Discussion This section provides information concerning the types, models and numbers of safety and relief valves used in PWR plant service. In addition, it provides a listing of the criteria followed in selecting the test valves, and a list of the valves which were selected for testing.

Section III -- Appendices These appendices provide the engineering evaluations performed by the individual valve manufacturers to show that the results of testing of the selected valves can be extended to other sizes of the same valve type, or other models. of the same valve type which have minor differences in detailed design features.
