Introduction All power operated relief valves supplied by Copes-Vulcan have been globe style valve bodies (model D-100).

The actuator supplied in all cases is a reverse acting, diaphragm opera.tor (model D-100-160).

Refer to attached Drawing SK-A-13529-L, Rev. o, for a complete listing of valve designs, applicable utilities, a.nd quantities used in domestic PWR pla.nts.

Description of the Ba.sic Valve Model The basic valve is a. 3-inch ca.st or forged straight through valve body. All valves have a bolted style body-bonnet joint with a. centering feature having a metal-to-metal shoulder to control gasket deformation.

The spiral wound 304 SS asbestos gaskets a.re completely trapped in the valve body and compressed a precise amount as required by the design.

All PORV's supplied utilize an air-loaded reverse-acting operator.

In a reverse-acting opera.tor a large compression spring provides the seating force to the stem and plug.

Air pressure loading the diaphragm chamber will overcome the spring force, thus stroking the valve.

The most important subassembly of a. control valve is the trim.

The trim supplied for all, PORVYs is unbalanced, single seat, plug throttling.

This trim modulates with a plug that ha.s a contour on its lower end.

The motion of the plug varies the annu1a.r flow clearance between the plug and cage, a.nd hence the flow.

The cage is a cylindrical spool piece surrounding the plug.

It has a number of flow ports, which uniformly distribute the flow a.round the plug a.nd also serve as a massive plug guide.

The ca.ge also carries the sea.t joint. This combination of.,cage,*

ca.ge spacer, and plug provides four principal a~varitages:

A.

Stable throttling at any pressure'drop; B.

Reduction in side load and friction due to the uniform flow distribution through the ports;

c.

Longer seat life by eliminating chatter at low lifts and by uniform flow distribution through the seat orifices; D.

Ease of maintenance due to quick change design.

Prior to 1971 the valves were constructed using a. 2:i

~ 1500 lb.

ca.st ~ralve body with 3" weJ.d end expanders, after 1971 the valves a.re constructed using a. forged 3-inch class 1500 weld end valve body.

These two designs a.re described en the attached tY?ical Drawings L-143844 a.nd D-176615.

Selected Test Valves The 3-inch valve body of the test valve would experience the larger effects of thermal cycles as compared to the smaller 2-inch valve bodies.

It is thoroughly described on the attached drawing D-166075.

The initial testing will be performed with the originally supplied 17-4 PH plug and cage.

A second set of testing will be performed on the 316 SS stellited plug with the 17-4 PH cage.

The thick walled cage spacer will be tested along with the 316 SS, stellited plug.

Design Variations Between PWR Plant Valves and Selected Test Va ves There are no design variations between the PWR plant valves and the selected test valves.

Two valve designs were supplied to the industry, thus two valve designs are being supplied for testing.

The two designs have the following:

Dissimilarities - Valves supplied prior to 1971 and tne issuance of the ASME Pump and Valve Code were constructed using a 2-inch/1500 lb. cast valve body with 3-inch weld end expanders (forced) and the valve trim materials consisting of 17-4 PH condition H-900 for plugs and 17-4 PH condition H-1100 for the valve seats.

Subsequent valves were supplied using a 3-inch Class 1500 forged weld end valve body, 316 SS stellited plug and the valve seat remained 17-4 PH condition H-1100.

After May 1981, a design improvement was made by increasing the wall of the cage spacer from 1/4-inch to approximately 3/4-inch. It is believed this thick walled cage spacer will provide greater stability during rapid high temperature transients.

Conclusion:==

The selected test valve along with the two trim combinations represent the Copes-Vulcan valves installed or to be installed in PWR plants and the EPRI test results are fully applicable to the Copes-Vulcan valves installed or to be installed in PWR plants.
