Dear Mr. Van Brunt:

SUBJECT:

APS

RESPONSE

TO CONCERNS RAISED BY PETITION REGARDING PALO VERDE SPRAY POND PIPING CORROSION AND EFFECTS ON OTHER SYSTEMS By letter dated May 6, 1985, the Coalition for Responsible Energy Education (CREE) filed a petition with the NRC which raises questions about the corrosion in the Palo Verde Spray Pond Piping and its effect on other systems.

We understand that APS has received a copy of this petition.

In order for the staff to complete the evaluation of the petition, it is desirable to consider your assessment of the matters raised in the petition.

Therefore, we request that you provide us an assessment of each of the issues.

The assessment should be self-supporting with appropriate references.

Due to the current schedule for Palo Verde Unit 1 full power licensing, an early reply is necessary.

Please arrange an appropriate response schedule with Mr. E. Licitra, the Licensing Project Manager.

If you have any questions regarding this letter, they can be discussed with Mr. Licitra at that time.

Sincerely, cc:
