SUBJECT:

TEMPORARY RELIEF FROM TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION 3.3.2, TABLE 3.3.2-1, ITEM 1.D.

(MAIN STEAM LINE TUNNEL TEMPERATURE-HIGH)

Your letter (G02-87-239) dated September 1,

1987 requested temporary relief from the Trip Setpoint limit for the main steam line tunnel temperature sensor in order to continue operation of Washington Nuclear Plant Number 2 while a Technical Specification change is prepared and corrective steps are implemented.

Based on our review of the information which you provided in your

letter, we concur that operation with the Setpoint at 156 degrees Fahrenheit

,provides adequate margin to the Allowable Value (Table 3.3.2-1) of 170 degrees Fahrenheit for interim operation with no undue risk to the health and safety of the public.

Because the action of reducing the margin does not provide undue risk to the public, we have determined that your request (G02-87-240, dated September 1,

1987) for a change to the Technical Specifications will be processed as an ordinary License Amendment.

Therefore this relief is effective immediately and is granted for a period of 90 days.

Sincerely, Original signed by Dennis Crutchfield for PDP
