Reportable Occurrence 335-81-.17'.icensea Event Report, Pa e?'n.

June 1?

1980,,

a; reactor: trip occurred. as a result of an-electrical failure of RCP C.C W.. isolation valves.

A natural circulation. cooldown. was required because cooling of. the RCP'eals could not. be reinitiated in a timely manner.

A modification to these valves, was made to allow for emergency quick-opening..

HCV 14-1,2,6 and, 7 are air, operated: valves and the modification made was. to attach flexible hoses. directly to the. exhaust ports, of the air operators.:

These.- hoses can. be connected:;: via. quick-disconnects to~ a'. nitrogen supply-in an emergency-to open: the valves..

Before: returning to power the valves, were.

tested and. the stroke times. were. satisfactory A reactor trip occurred. on. April 16 1981',

due to'; transformer failure.

On, April. 17,.198L, HCV-14-1'.,Z,6~ and; T were stroked'uring; cold. shutdown, surveillances.

and the: stroke. times were excessive It. was found, that. the flexible hose was-restricting. airflow-through these.. valves A; new.

modification was made in. which-a, tee. was attached! to the exhaust port',. the hose. was connecteL to one sid'e of the tee and; a, valve was-connected to the other; side This. allowed. for a. more; free flow; of exhaust: air and. this brought'troke times'ack i'nto specification-In an: emergency the valve. can, be.

closed' the hose attached: to. a; nitrogen supply. and the-C;C W
