Structural and Geotechnical Engineering Branch Di'vision of Engineering TRIP REPORT FOR MEETING - OCTOBER 1-,5,

1984, WITH PG&E ON DIABLO. CANYON UNIT 2. AUDIT From October 1 thru 5, 1984, P-. T. Kuo; Harold Polk, and N. Chokshi of the SGEB staff and consultants C. Miller, C. Constantino and A.

Philippacopoulos of Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) met with the PG&E Diablo Canyon Project staff on the evaluation. of Diablo Canyon Unit 2 design.

The purpose of the trip'was to identify the engineering material needed to conduct

a. staff. audit on the adequacy of civil/structural design and analyses.

Items that were identified as being necessary to begin the audit process are contained in Enclosure 1.

After this material has been evaluated additional material may be required.

The staff and its consultants toured the Diablo Canyon Unit 2 facility on October 4 to become more familiar with the physical layout and construction of the unit.

The staff also reviewed the calculations for several safety related masonry block walls and inspected walls during the plant visit.

quality assurance/quality control measures were discussed with PG&E,.

A copy of the staff's position-with respect to the energy balance technique to qualify the walls was provided to PG&E during the discussions.

PG&E provided:= considerable information and several construction personnel who were present during the wall construction.

The staf projects additional audits to be conducted in the very near future.
