Pacific Gas and SElectric Company' Diablo Canyon Power Plant P.0.Box 56 Avila Beach, CA 93424 PG&E Letter DCL-2014-523 Certified/Return Receipt

  1. 7010-1060-0000-4204-4869 June 17, 2014 Justin Viezbicke California Stranding Network Coordinator NOAA Fisheries 501 West Ocean Blvd., Suite 4200 Long Beach, California 90802-4213 Marine Mammal Strandinq Report (Sea Lion) Diablo Canyon Power Plant

Dear Mr. Viezbicke:

Enclosed is a NOAA Form 89-864 Marine Mammal Stranding Report for a dead sea lion (Zalophus californianus)discovered in the Diablo Canyon Power Plant (DCPP) intake structure. The sea lion was discovered on June 05, 2014 against the Unit 2 intake bar racks.

As authorized in a letter dated June 3, 1994 from the National Marine Fisheries Service, DCPP removed the deceased sea lion from the intake structure and transported it offshore. The sea lion was 43 inches in length with an estimated weight of 35-40 pounds. The animal had moderate decomposition. Most of the head was decomposed (reference enclosed photograph). There was no indication of cause of death due to the decomposition. It appears that this animal died and drifted up against the power plant intake bar racks. Intake flows are not a challenge to live sea lions, and the animals are frequently observed swimming in and out of the intake structure bar rack bay openings. There was no indication of an adverse impact to the specimen due to power plant operations. It is most likely that the sea lion's death is attributable to natural causes.

Verbal notification of this incident was reported to NOAA Fisheries on June 05, 2014 (the day of discovery).

Should you have any questions or concerns regarding the enclosed report, or require additional information, please contact Jim Kelly of my staff at (805) 545-3194.

Sincerely, Kenneth W. Cortese Manager- Chemistry and Environmental Operations 2014523/jlk/bkc Enclosures (2)

ADDITIONAL REMARKS ADDITIONAL IDENTIFIER: (Ifanimal is restranded, please indicate any previous field numbers here)

The sea lion carcass was found against the 2-6 bar racks in the Diablo Canyon Power Plant intake structure. The animal had apparently died nearby, and drifted on to the bar racks in the intake cooling water flow. The carcass was removed by divers, photographed, and the remains towed offshore where it was released. There was no indication of an adverse impact to the animal due to power plant operations.
