SUMMARY

OF PUBLIC MEETINGS TO DISCUSS DRAFT SUPPLEMENT 51 TO THE GENERIC ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT FOR LICENSE RENEWAL OF NUCLEAR PLANTS REGARDING CALLAWAY PLANT, UNIT 1 (TAC NO. ME7716)

On March 19, 2014, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held two identical public meetings at the Fulton City Hall, Council Chambers in Fulton, MO to discuss the preliminary findings of, and receive public comments on, the draft supplemental environmental impact statement (SEIS) on the proposed renewal of the operating license for Callaway Plant, Unit 1 (Callaway). The preliminary finding of this report is that the adverse environmental impacts of license renewal for Callaway are not great enough to deny the option of license renewal for energy-planning decision makers. Approximately 35 people attended the meetings.

The public comment period closed on April 7, 2014. The staff plans to issue the final SEIS by November 2014. The attendees included members of the public, members of the NRC staff, representatives from Ameren, news media, and local government officials. Public comments and questions expressed ideas related to both the benefits of license renewal and nuclear power and the disadvantages of the same.

A combined listing of attendees for both sessions is provided in Enclosure 1. Enclosure 2 is a copy of the meeting agenda. Enclosures 3 and 4 are the transcripts from the afternoon and evening meetings. Enclosure 5 is the presentation that was used for the meetings.

The official transcripts for both meetings are publicly available at the NRC Public Document Room (PDR), located at One White Flint North, 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland 20852, or from the NRC's Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS).

The ADAMS Public Electronic Reading Room is accessible at http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html. The transcripts for the afternoon and evening meetings are listed under Accession Nos. ML14112A380 and ML14112A366, respectively. A copy of the slides used during the NRC's presentation is also available in ADAMS under Accession No. ML14112A355.
