Dear Dr. Mattson:

Last April 25, 1 had a very thorough letter frorm you in reply to sorne queries I had on the San Onofre nuclear power plants.

Many thanks for all the data you sent at that time.

I now have some additional ques tions and hope you can help me with the answers again.

1.

Not knowing the construction features of Units 1, 2 and 3, can you tell ne what kind of tops the reactor units of these three installa tions have and how the tops of the reactors are held in place for instance, with bolts?

2.

What kind of Emergency Core-Cooling Systems are installed in Units 1, 2 and 3, and were these ECCS's part of the original installations in all three instances?

3.

Is Zircaloy used in the manufacture of the IaM rods of Units 1, 2 and 3? If so, how ductile is Zircaloy? At what heat does Zircaloy become zirconium oxide ? If constructed of Zircaloy, how much will the rods swell when heated?

4.

If required, how quickly would the injection of ECCS water reflood the cores of Units 1, 2 and 3 (assuming this is the way the system is designed) ?

5.

Have there ever been any Class 8 accidents at San Onofre ? If so, when and what kind of accidents?

6.

If Units 1, 2 and 3 have pressurized water reactors, have there ever been any improvements required in this part of the installation, and if so, what kind of improvements? When ?

7.

In considering generic safety problems, can you tell rre in what direction the turbine generators are oriented in Units 1, 2 and 3?

Are they directed towards the reactor, away from it, etc. ?

Page -2 In your letter of April 25, 1983 you stated that San Onofre Unit 2 was committed to install a direct reading water level indicator at the first refueling outage.

Has this first refueling outage happened and, if so, was the direct reading water level indicator ever installed?

If San Onofre Unit 1 is now back in operation, what decision has been made as to the installation of a direct reading water level indicator for Unit 1 ?

I am just a layman so my terminology may not be correct in the scientific sense.

I do hope that you can understand my queries and will very much appreciate a response to them.

Sincerely, (Mrs.) Betty Geismar P. O. Box 2000-20 Mission Viejo, CA 92690
